The Greater Northampton Chamber of Commerce is proud to support Driver’s Licenses for All!
We’ve signed on as a supporter of the Work and Family Mobility Act, a bill currently in the Massachusetts State Legislature that would make it possible for all MA residents to apply for a standard driver’s license regardless of immigration status. We support this bill along with over 100 local businesses because we recognize that:
- Immigrant members of our community should be able to get to work, school, doctor appointments and more without fearing detention, deportation, and separation from their children. As a welcoming and open community, we stand in support of our immigrant friends, neighbors, coworkers and employees.
- Allowing everyone to go through the process of applying for a driver’s license will make regulation easier and roads safer. The Work and Family Mobility Act will ensure that all drivers know the rules of the road and are capable of following them — and it will also increase the percentage of drivers who can access insurance!
- Enabling more people to drive increases economic vitality, and benefits our local economy. Under current law, immigrant members of our community are frequently too fearful of detention, deportation and family separation to get behind the wheel except in cases where they have no choice. If every eligible person has equal access to driver’s licenses, they are able to drive for basic necessities, but also to patronize our local businesses — restaurants, movie theaters, retailers and more. The Work and Family Mobility Act is not only good for our community — it’s good for our businesses!
Legislation like this has already been adopted in 15 other states, including Connecticut, Vermont, New York, and New Jersey. We hope you’ll join the Northampton Chamber in supporting the Work and Family Mobility Act so that Massachusetts can keep driving families forward!
